Machine learning master’s student Sayed Hashim has dedicated his artificial intelligence (AI) research to better cancer diagnosis and treatment after losing two loved ones to the disease. Hailing from Kerala, India, Hashim recently lost his grandmother to pancreatic cancer after a delayed diagnosis, and his grandfather when he was young. If you’d done a Google News search for “autonomous planes” in late November, one of the first results to come up would have been this: “Ethiopian Airlines to Employ Ray, an Autonomous Aircraft Sanitization Robot.” So, no, we are not there yet. To some degree, we already have self-flying planes, but even the most advanced autopilot requires input from its flesh-and-blood counterparts, who are also called on to handle contingencies. For this reason alone, the complete removal of what might be called Biological Safety Systems—that is, people—is likely decades away.
