How can I get to know the program curriculum?

The undergraduate website is updated regularly with curriculum details. The first year focuses largely on the foundational knowledge which is required to be successful in the field of AI (e.g. python programming, mathematical foundations for AI, software development, computers 101, communication 101, and machine learning techniques to name a few). In the second and third year, students can branch into specific areas of interest either in the AI engineering field or the business field. In the Engineering-related track some of the topics are around data engineering, robotics and data communications and networks. In the Business-related track some of the topics are around financial management and accounting, supply chains and design thinking. The fourth year is an in-industry co-op/placement where students will apply the theoretical foundations to build their own start-up or working with a company to build AI solutions.

What is the difference between the Engineering and Business streams?

Both streams focus on the practical use of AI in real-world situations, but they differ in focus. The Engineering-related track delves deeper into understanding how AI works, along with its benefits and limitations. In contrast, the Business-related track emphasizes developing a deeper understanding of business and entrepreneurship challenges that can benefit from AI technology. At the end of the four-year program, students from both streams will graduate with a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Artificial Intelligence.

Can I switch streams after enrolling?

Yes, students can switch streams within the first year of enrolment or during their degree. What is the final-year cooperative education program?

In the final year, students work full-time in an industry placement instead of taking classes. This is a credit-bearing course so there are certain requirements that need to be fulfilled, but we will help our students ensure they meet these objectives.

Do I need to find my final-year industry placement on my own?

No, MBZUAI’s Career and Professional Development Services will assist students in securing placement opportunities. The team works with employers to ensure that co-op experiences align with academic requirements and benefit both students and companies. Some students may secure placements through prior internships, financial sponsors, or personal networking, and the Careers team will help match students with industry partners for meaningful opportunities.

Can I choose more electives than the number required? If yes, do I need to pay extra for the credits?

The B.Sc. degree includes a combination of 28 elective and mandatory courses. Students typically take five courses per semester over six semesters. There is flexibility to take additional electives without extra cost, as long as academic requirements are met. Students who perform outstandingly in their first year may also apply to take an extra course in later semesters.

Can I waive any core courses? If yes, what is the requirement for qualification?

In general, core courses cannot be waived. However, students who can demonstrate that they have already met the course learning outcomes through prior experience may request a review. In exceptional cases, a waiver may be granted, provided the student has met the relevant GPA requirements and is in good academic standing. In those instances students will be allowed to take an additional elective or a more advanced course in its place.
