MBZUAI President, Professor Eric Xing has been elected a fellow of the American Statistical Association (ASA) for 2022. Xing was recognized by the ASA for pioneering machine learning research in structured, high-dimensional inference, Bayesian nonparametrics, and probabalistic graphical models, entrepreneurship in scalable AI solutions across a broad range of sectors, and leadership in AI education.
Xing is among 48 fellows elected by the ASA for 2022. According to the ASA, to be designated a Fellow of the ASA one must have an “established reputation and have made outstanding contributions to statistical science.”
Previous honorees include the founding dean of Harvard Business School Edwin Francis Gay, economist Milton Friedman, Nobel laureate Kenneth Arrow, and a who’s who list of U.S. lawmakers, diplomats and eminent Ivy League academics.
Prior to joining MBZUAI, Xing was a professor of computer science at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), and the founder, chairman, and chief scientist of Petuum Inc., which was recognized as a 2018 World Economic Forum Technology Pioneer. Xing is the founding director of the Center for Machine Learning and Health at CMU, and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Xing has also been a visiting associate professor at Stanford University, and a visiting research professor at Facebook.
Xing is a recipient of the National Science Foundation (NSF) Career Award; the Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship in Computer Science, the United States Air Force Office of Scientific Research Young Investigator Award, the IBM Open Collaborative Research Faculty Award, as well as several best paper awards. He is a board member of the International Machine Learning Society. He is a Fellow of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI), and an Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Fellow.
