ABU DHABI, 19 September 2021: As part of its ongoing efforts to advance knowledge and capability in AI, Mohammed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) held the latest MBZUAI AI Talks focusing on AI in government. The webinar, moderated by MBZUAI Provost Professor Fakhri Karray, was attended by researchers, faculty members, students from UAE and abroad and local tech experts.

The new program also plays into the UAE’s broader AI ambitions, according Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, the UAE’s Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology (and chairman of MBZUAI’s board of trustees). The consultancy PwC estimates that AI could contribute some $15.7 trillion to the global economy by 2030, and the UAE has repeatedly stated its intention to grab a sizable chunk of that market. Just this week, the UAE unveiled its roadmap for the next 50 years, allocating AED 5 billion ($1.36B) to drive industries toward the Fourth Industrial Revolution over the next five years—and generate AED 25 billion ($6.81B) in the process.

Her Excellency Mrs. Birgit Lao, Ambassador-at-large for Education at the Ministry of Education and Research of the Republic of Estonia and an accompanying delegation of executives and officials visited the Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI). The delegation was hosted by senior representatives from MBZUAI and learned about the University's vision for using AI as a transformative tool for positive progress. They also discussed the UAE’s AI ecosystem, as well as the possibility of partnerships and collaborations in the future.

The Program is designed to support senior leaders across public and private sectors, undersecretaries and assistant undersecretaries, C-suite executives, leaders in IT, technology and across multiple functions and industries seeking to understand the possibilities of AI.

A total of 74 students have joined the three programs offered, including 66 who will pursue master’s degrees and nine who will pursue PhDs courses. A total of 41 students have joined the University’s Computer Vision program, and a further 24 for Machine Learning. MBZUAI has also introduced Natural Language Processing (NLP) this year, with 9 students registered for the inaugural class.

We are excited to announce that Professor Fakhreddine (Fakhri) Karray from University of Waterloo will be joining the Mohamed Bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence as Provost. He will be taking the reins from former provost Professor Ling Shao who intends to return to the faculty and resume a focus on research and teaching.

H.E. Sara Musallam, Chairwoman of Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK), met with our President, Prof. Eric Xing, and our executive team on June 16, 2021. During the visit, which included a tour of our campus at Masdar City, they discussed MBZUAI’s vision for using AI as a transformative tool for positive progress, the key milestones of the University and programs offered, MBZUAI's role in supporting the education ecosystem in Abu Dhabi as well as the potential collaborations between MBZUAI and ADEK.
