Following on from the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed by the Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) and the Weizmann Institute of Science (WIS) in September 2020, the two institutions have announced the establishment of the MBZUAI-WIS Joint Program for Artificial Intelligence Research (the AI Program). The new program will promote collaborative initiatives in fundamental artificial intelligence (AI) research and will explore AI applications in domains such as healthcare, genomics and more.

His Excellency Abdilatif Jumabaev, Ambassador of the Kyrgyz Republic to the UAE, and His Excellency Almazbek Beishenaliev, Minister of Education and Science of the Kyrgyz Republic, visited Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI), the world’s first graduate-level, research-based artificial intelligence (AI) university. The Kyrgyz delegation was hosted by Reem Al Orfali, Director of Student Affairs. The visit included a tour of MBZUAI’s MASDAR City campus, labs, and classrooms.

MBZUAI is proud to announce that Professor Dr. Le Song has joined MBZUAI as Deputy Department Chair of the Machine Learning Department. Dr. Le Song has led a lengthy and distinguished career that spans decades as a research pioneer and academic in machine learning and artificial intelligence. Prof. Le Song’s impressive portfolio includes his several years’ experience in various Institutes such as Georgia Institute of Technology, Google Research, Carnegie Mellon University and National ICT Australia.

The President of Ukraine, His Excellency Volodymyr Zelensky, and the First Lady of Ukraine, Olena Zelenska visited Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI), the world’s first graduate-level, research-based artificial intelligence (AI) university. The delegation of Ukrainian officials was hosted by Dr. Eric Xing, President of MBZUAI; Dr. Behjat Al Yousuf, Executive Vice President for Outreach and Engagement; Professor Ling Shao, Executive Vice President and Provost; Dr. Hosni Ghedira, Director Engagement Services, and Reem Al Orfali, Director of Student Affairs.

The event welcomed 78 students who have joined the University from 29 countries. MBZUAI’s first students were selected from thousands of applications received by the University from nearly 100 countries. The first cohort includes 13 PhD students and 65 MSc students, who have enrolled in MBZUAI’s Machine Learning and Computer Vision programs.

Prof. Ling Shao, Executive Vice President and Provost of the University and CEO and Chief Scientist of the Inception Institute of Artificial Intelligence (IIAI), has been elected an IEEE Fellow for his distinguished contributions to computer vision and representation learning. The prestigious IEEE Fellowship is a distinction given to select IEEE members whose accomplishments in any of the IEEE fields of interest are deemed to be fitting of the prestigious grade elevation. The distinction is considered one of the highest accolades in the field of computer science and AI, and is awarded based on a rigorous selection process. IEEE is the world’s largest technical professional organization dedicated to advancing technology for the benefit of humanity.

The visit was hosted by Dr. Behjat Al Yousuf, MBZUAI Executive Vice President for Outreach and Engagement; Professor Ling Shao, Executive Vice President and Provost; Dr. Hosni Ghedira, Director Engagement Services, and Reem Al Orfali, Director of Student Affairs. During his visit, which included a tour of the University’s Masdar City campus, the Ambassador discussed key milestones of the University and programs offered, as well as the potential for future collaborations and opportunities for students from Costa Rica.
