Research interests

Professor Karray’s research interests are in the areas of operational AI, multi-modal fusion transformers, and distributed agents architecture for generative AI. Applications of his research include virtual healthcare systems (telemedicine); cognitive and self-aware machines/robots/vehicles in smart cities environment; predictive analytics in supply chain management and intelligent transportation systems.

Prior to joining MBZUAI, Professor Karray held the Loblaws Research Chair in Artificial Intelligence in the department of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Waterloo, Canada.He is the Inaugural co-Director of the AI Institute at the University of Waterloo (Canada), and served as the Provost of MBZUAI. Professor Karray is a Fellow and Distinguished Lecturer of the IEEE, a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering and a Fellow of the Engineering Institute in Canada. He earned his Ph.D. degree from University of Illinois Urbana Champaign, USA.

Professor Karray was honored in 2021 by the IEEE Vehicular Technology Society (VTS) for his novel work on improving traffic flow prediction using weather Information in connected cars through deep learning and tools of AI. He is the co-author of recently published textbook “Elements of Dimensionality Reduction and Manifold Learning”, Springer 2023.

He is the co-founder and Chief Scientist of Yourika.ai, a provider of AI-based online learning systems.
