Today the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) has announced its 2022 Class of Fellows honored for their outstanding accomplishments in computing and information technology or outstanding service to the ACM and larger computing community.
We are excited that MBZUAI President and University Professor Eric Xing is among the 57 ACM fellows elevated this year, for his “contributions to algorithms, architectures, and applications in machine learning.” The MBZUAI community heartily congratulate Professor Xing for this prestigious recognition.
Xing’s research focuses on the development of machine learning and statistical methodology, and large-scale computational systems and architectures, for solving problems involving automated learning, reasoning, and decision-making in high-dimensional, multimodal, and dynamic possible worlds in artificial, biological, and social systems. His numerous contributions include foundational work in distance metric learning, statistical network modeling, distributed systems and algorithms for machine learning, and controlled text generation, with lasting impact in AI research and practice.
As MBZUAI’s first president, Xing has led the university’s extraordinary growth in fundamental AI research and has presided over the assemblage of a world-class cadre of eminent faculty. He has created a platform for students and faculty to showcase their research at an international level and in alignment with national priorities, while maintaining excellence and a strong balance in basic research and translational R&D.
