Patenting Software and AI inventions

Many of the inventions and innovations that are shaping the modern economy are in the software and AI technologies. Software can be easily pirated and copied without attribution or credit to the originating technologist. Patent protection is an important tool for protecting the value of intellectual property associated with software and AI inventions. In contrast to many other inventions in the sciences, software inventions, and especially AI inventions, need special care in order to qualify for the protections provided by patent law. Key points for describing and claiming inventions in the software and AI technologies will be explained.

Stefan Uwe Koschmieder, PH.D., is an attorney and a partner at the Oblon firm in Alexandria VA. Oblon is one of the largest U.S. patent and IP firms and has regularly been at the top of all firms for obtaining U.S. patents. Dr. Koschmieder has an M.B.A, a Ph.D. in chemistry, and several years of technical, business and marketing experience in the high-tech industries.
