MBZUAI to play vanguard role at NeurIPS 2023

Friday, November 17, 2023

The Mohamed bin Zayed University for Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) continued to cement its position at the forefront of international AI research with the news that its faculty and students will be delivering 53 papers at the upcoming Conference on Neural Information Processing Systems (NeurIPS) 2023.

One of the most influential annual meetings for presenting and sharing research on neural information processing systems in a biological, technological, mathematical, and theoretical context, NeurIPS is now in its 37th year.

In total, 26 MBZUAI faculty will be represented including President and University Professor Eric Xing, Kun Zhang, Acting Chair of Machine Learning, Professor of Machine Learning, and Director of Center for Integrative Artificial Intelligence, and Visiting Associate Professor of Machine Learning, Tongliang Liu, who will each appear on nine papers each alongside their co-authors.

They are joined by Professor Salman Khan, Associate Professor of Computer Vision, who has co-authored five papers, and Professors Bhiksha Raj, Fahad Khan, Bin Gu, Zhiqiang Xu, and Yuanzhi Li with four papers respectively. Given that NeurIPS only accepts around 26 per cent of the papers that are submitted each year, such a high level participation by MBZUAI is a notable achievement.

MBZUAI’s contribution includes a highly prestigious oral presentation, Generalizing Nonlinear ICA Beyond Structural Sparsity, by Yujia Zheng and Kun Zhang, as well as two spotlight presentations: Squeeze, Recover and Relabel: Dataset Condensation at ImageNet Scale From A New Perspective by Zeyuan Yin, Eric Xing, and Zhiqiang Shen; and Subspace Identification for Multi-Source Domain Adaptation by Zijian Li, Ruichu Cai, Guangyi Chen, Boyang Sun, Zhifeng Hao, and Kun Zhang.

Professors Kun Zhang, Acting Chair of Machine Learning, Fahad Khan, Deputy Department Chair of Computer Vision, Salman Khan, and Martin Takáč, Deputy Department Chair of Machine Learning have also been invited to act as area chairs at the event.

NeurIPS | 2023 is being held between 10-16 December at the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, the sixth largest convention facility in the USA. NeurIPS was founded and continues to be organized by the Neural Information Processing Systems Foundation, a non-profit corporation whose purpose is to foster the exchange of research advances in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning.

Top ranked for computer science in the MENA region, MBZUAI currently ranks 19th globally in its areas of specialization – AI, computer vision (CV), machine learning (ML), and natural language processing (NLP) – according to CSRankings. The updated rankings place MBZUAI alongside institutions such as MIT, the University of California, Berkeley, ETH Zurich, Nanjing University, and the University of Washington.
