In this talk, I will cover two crucial aspects of doing computer system research: forming ideas and writing papers. For the first topic, I will share my past experiences-both successes and failures-to help the audience develop essential skills for generating research ideas (yes, they often seem to fall from the sky, but you need to know how to catch them). In the second part, I will provide a step-by-step, top-down tutorial on the basic principles of structure, paragraphs, sentences, and word choices in academic writing.
Erci Xu is a storage researcher primarily focused on distributed storage systems and software/hardware reliability. He has published 20 papers in prestigious system venues, including OSDI, FAST, ATC, and Eurosys. He is the recipient of two FAST Best Paper Awards (FAST '23 and FAST 24) and has also received the ACM SIGOPS China Rising Star Award.
