From cloud computing to cloudless computing

Monday, November 11, 2024

Many enterprises host their IT infrastructures in the cloud. However, configuring and provisioning the underlying cloud resources remains a challenging task, because the cloud only exposes a shim layer of APIs, and tenants do not have deep visibility into cloud semantics. Cloud infrastructure management, therefore, has elevated into a first-order concern that must be addressed by dedicated engineering teams; and even the slightest mistakes jeopardize infrastructure reliability. In this talk, I’ll describe our work on reducing cloud manageability burdens: in detecting semantic errors before cloud deployment, and in curating datasets for automated generation of cloud management programs. Like serverless computing that promises to relieve the burden of server management, cloudless computing aims to free tenants from cloud management tasks, so that they can better focus on their business workloads.
