Eight MBZUAI students representing eight different countries took part in an immersive role-play simulation of a COP28 session last week as part of the Climate Ambassadors Programme (CAP).

Celebrated as the “Youth COP”, the 30 students in attendance represented several UAE universities including MBZUAI, the American University of Sharjah (AUS), the Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT), Zayed University, New York University Abu Dhabi (NYU), and Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi.

Divided into four main groups, the ambassadors were assigned a specific country and learnt about the impact of climate change on that country. They then worked together to develop innovative solutions to address the critical issues through a final consensus and workable action plans.

MBZUAI’s climate ambassadors include master’s students Klea Ziu, Adnan Khan, Gokul Kumar, Aisha Alraeesi, Maryam Alghfeli, Dilshod Azizov, Kaleab Belay, and Muhammad Huzaifa.

M.Sc. of Machine Learning student, Ziu, said they were given a unique opportunity to study, explore, and learn more about the diverse challenges nations face due to climate change.

“As representatives of the world’s first specialized, research-based AI university, MBZUAI, we have gained a deeper appreciation for the crucial role that AI can play in addressing climate change and offering viable solutions,” she said.

“Being a part of such an impactful event was truly inspiring and has heightened our awareness of the urgent need to take proactive steps toward positively impacting the environment and protecting our planet for future generations.

The experience has demonstrated that every individual can play a significant role in combating climate change within their communities and beyond.

“Working together, we can achieve a sustainable and healthy planet for all. We remain committed to continuing our participation in this global effort and are eager to inspire others to join us in taking action toward a greener future.”

Held at Expo City Dubai, the event is part of a series of CAP sessions in the lead up to COP28 this November and December. CAP is a collaboration between the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) and the Expo Schools Programme.

Five of the MBZUAI ambassador students are expected to graduate this June.
