Through cutting-edge research and partnerships, MBZUAI is pioneering LLMs that are efficient, effective, and accurate. In addition, our faculty are working on foundation models for biology and climate change, over different data modalities.

Eric Xing
MBZUAI President and University Professor
As a world-leading computer scientist, Xing excels in theory, application, and system at the same time. His major contributions lie in the foundational work of statistical machine learning methodology, including pioneering work in distance metric learning; statistical models and analyses of networks; methods for learning and analyzing graphical models; and new systems, theories, and algorithms for distributed machine learning.
As professor in the Carnegie Mellon School of Computer Science, he was founding director of the Center for Machine Learning and Health at Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. He has served as a visiting associate professor at Stanford University, and as a visiting research professor at Facebook Inc. Xing is also the Founder, Chairman, and former Chief Scientist and CEO of Petuum Inc.

Developed through a partnership between MBZUAI and Core42, a subsidiary of the Abu Dhabi-based technology holding group G42, it caters to government decision-makers, business leaders, students, and families, making climate data accessible to more than 274 million Arabic and 1.4 billion English speakers worldwide. Jais Climate is fine-tuned with 1.4 million climate-related instructions to provide detailed information about the UAE’s environmental policies, as well as the upcoming United Nations Climate Change Conference, COP28 UAE.
