Metaverse: Communities, Layers, and Research

Metaverse became a topic of public concern in late 2021, after Facebook changed its name to Meta. However, a little-known fact is that the term “metaverse” has been widely used in crypto/Web3 community since 2017, when its members started to advertise their vision of the decentralized virtual world. In this talk, the speaker will present the community, layers, recent developments, and future trends for the Web3 metaverse. The speaker will first review the history of metaverse development and introduce the different views from multiple research communities to clarify the importance of Web3 research in this area. Afterward, the speaker will study industrial Web3 metaverse cases, including land projects and profile picture NFT projects, to motivate future directions. Furthermore, the speaker will present recent research outcomes to discuss the metaverse research spectrum from different layers and communities. The speaker will also envision the future of the metaverse from the Web3 community perspective.

Dr. Wei Cai is currently an assistant professor of Computer Engineering, the School of Science and Engineering at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen. He is serving as the director of the Human-Cloud Systems Laboratory, as well as the director of the CUHK(SZ)-White Matrix Joint Metaverse Laboratory. Wei received Ph.D., M.Sc., and B.Eng. from The University of British Columbia (UBC), Seoul National University, and Xiamen University in 2016, 2011, and 2008, respectively. Dr. Cai has co-authored more than 80 journal and conference papers in the area of interactive multimedia and distributed/decentralized systems. His recent research interests are mainly in the topic of human-centered metaverse, including blockchain, Web 3.0, digital game, DeFi/GameFi, UGC/AIGC, and computational art. He is now serving as TPC members for top conferences including ACM MM, MMSys, NOSSDAV, GameSys, associate editor for IEEE Transactions on Cloud Computing, and guest editors for many leading journals including ACM TOMM, IEEE Multimedia, TNSE, TCSS, etc. He is also an executive committee member of the China Computer Federation (CCF) Computational Art Committee, Technical Committee on Human-Computer Interaction, and Technical Committee on Blockchain. He was a recipient of 6 best paper awards.
