Turing award winner brings AI expertise to UAE

Professor of Computer Science and Robotics at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), Raj Reddy, spoke recently as part of the MBZUAI Executive Program. Reddy, a Turing Award laureate, served as the founding Director of the Robotics Institute and as the Dean of the School of Computer Science at CMU. He has also served as the President of the American Association for Artificial Intelligence and is an inaugural IEEE Intelligent Systems’ AI Hall of Fame inductee.

Before joining CMU, Reddy worked as an Applied Science Representative for the IBM Corporation and was an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at Stanford. His research interests include Artificial Intelligence and the study of human-computer interaction; Technology in Service of Society; Cognition Amplifiers and Guardian Angels; Digital Democracy; Universal Digital Archive; and more.

A prominent academician, Reddy is a Turing Award laureate and a winner of the Okawa Prize. He has been awarded fellowships at numerous prestigious institutions, including the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers; the Acoustical Society of America; the American Association for Artificial Intelligence; and he is a Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Reddy was also awarded the Legion of Honor by President Mitterand of France and Padma Bhushan by the President of India.

Reddy has received honorary doctorates (Doctor Honoris Causa) from S.V. University, Université Henri Poincaré, University of New South Wales, Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, University of Massachusetts, and University of Warwick, amongst many others. He is currently a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, the Indian National Science Academy, and India National Academy of Engineering.

Reddy received a B.E. degree from the Guindy Engineering College of Madras, India and an MTech degree from the University of New South Wales, Australia. He also holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Stanford University.
