We are tackling the challenge of balancing the creation of AI for the good of the planet, while also considering its environmental impact as a priority.
A team from MBZUAI’s Centre for Integrative Artificial Intelligence have developed an AI Operating System (AIOS) for decarbonisation that considers the carbon footprint at every stage of development, from the energy used training large language models and chatbots, to how computers communicate with each other. AIOS has already been used to develop the chatbot Vicuna, at a fraction of the cost and carbon footprint and achieves 90% of ChatGPT’s quality.
“There’s a surprising amount of energy waste with AI that we can cut down,” says Assistant Professor of Machine Learning at MBZUAI, Qirong Ho. “The AI future needs to be low-carbon, economical and human empowering.”
