Research Interests

Professor Khan’s research focuses on shaping the next generation of intelligent systems through advances in efficient, scalable, and controllable artificial intelligence. His work explores the development of compact, domain-specialized language models designed for deployment in resource-constrained, distributed, and real-time environments. His research spans high-impact application domains, including smart cities, manufacturing, energy systems, transportation, healthcare, and critical infrastructure, where trustworthy AI must operate under stringent performance, safety, and regulatory requirements.

A central dimension of his work addresses AI governance, responsible deployment, and compliance frameworks, integrating emerging global standards and regulatory principles into the design, deployment, and lifecycle management of intelligent systems. Professor Khan’s broader vision centers on agentic AI and autonomous decision-making systems, with a strong emphasis on trust, reliability, and transparency to enable the next generation of collaborative intelligence.

Professor Khan is a technologist and researcher with over 15 years of working with global tech industries, specializing in the application of artificial intelligence across critical domains such as digital health, smart manufacturing, intelligent mobility, and sustainable infrastructure. His work centers on transforming research into practice converting innovative ideas into scalable, real-world solutions that address pressing technological and societal challenges. Prior to joining MBZUAI, Professor Khan has held senior leadership roles in global organizations where he directed multidisciplinary teams, building strong partnerships with industry leaders, government agencies, and academic institutions. He has successfully driven innovation from concept to deployment, ensuring that advanced AI solutions are not only technically robust but also practical, sustainable, and impactful.
