Professor Chatterjee's research interests span empirical industrial organization, health/pharmaceutical markets, technological change and economics of development.

In addition to his MBZUAI appointment, Professor Chatterjee is Professor of Development Economics, Innovation and Global Health at U-Sussex and Visiting Professor at Max Planck Institute (Germany) and Ahmedabad-U (India). He is a 2025 Founding Fellow of the Royal Economic Society, and had earlier been a 2018-19 National Fellow at Stanford University (Hoover Institution).

Professor Chatterjee held academic positions as Professor and Reader in Economics of Innovation at the Science Policy Research Unit, University of Sussex, ICICI Bank Chair in Economics & Strategy and Chairperson (CMHS) at IIM Ahmedabad, and faculty roles at the Indian School of Business as well as IIM Bangalore.
