Anil K. Jain - MBZUAI MBZUAI

Anil K. Jain

Adjunct Distinguished Professor of Computer Vision

Research Interests

Professor Jain's teaching and research interests span pattern recognition, computer vision, and biometric recognition, with a particular focus on fingerprint and face recognition systems. His work has established biometric recognition as a rigorous scientific field, addressing foundational questions around identity, uniqueness, and system reliability. He has developed scalable methods for fingerprint representation, heterogeneous face recognition across imaging modalities, and multimodal biometric systems deployed in large-scale national ID programs. His research also extends to low-cost biometric technologies for global health applications, including infant identification for vaccination and nutrition programs.

In addition to his position at MBZUAI, Professor Jain is a University Distinguished Professor and Douglas E. Zongker Endowed Professor at Michigan State University where he has taught and conducted research for over 50 years. Jain has held visiting appointments at the National Science Foundation (NSF), The Instituto Superior Técnico, Lisbon, University of Oslo, ETH, University of Bonn, Osaka University, and International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad. His research has addressed challenges in dimensionality reduction, unsupervised learning, 3D object recognition, texture representation and matching and applications in remote sensing, medical imaging and biometric recognition.

Professor Jain's laboratory has licensed a number of technologies to major companies: large-scale fingerprint matching (IBM); tattoo matching and retrieval, sketch to mugshot matching and altered fingerprint recognition (Safran-Morpho, now Idemia), large-scale fingerprint matching and large-scale face recognition (NEC), and latent fingerprint recognition and fingerprint synthesis (Thales). He has also served as the Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence (PAMI) and asa member of the IEEE Publications Board.
