MBZUAI Talks to discuss emerging applications and opportunities in biometrics recognition technology

AI Talks series

Sunday, August 30, 2020

With the ever-growing significance of contactless biometric technology in a world changed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI), the world’s first graduate-level, research-based artificial intelligence (AI) university, invites members of the public to participate in its upcoming MBZUAI Talks webinar, ‘Biometric Recognition: How do I Know Who You Are?”, on 1 September from 6-7pm UAE time.

The session will be hosted by Professor Anil K. Jain, a member of MBZUAI’s Board of Trustees and Distinguished Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Michigan State University. During the webinar, Dr. Jain will discuss the recent advances of AI research in biometrics, as well as its current and emerging applications, while shedding some light on challenges such as user privacy and security concerns. He will also highlight the opportunities presented by the new biometric and facial recognition systems that are emerging as a result of the pandemic.

“Biometric technology is increasingly prominent in its applications to enhance user security, verify national ID, secure access control, and deter financial fraud,” said Professor Anil K. Jain. “Despite the progress made, a number of challenges and lack of understanding amongst the general public continue to inhibit the full potential of biometrics. In this talk I will highlight state of the art in biometrics and emphasize research topics to enhance the reliability, security and accuracy of biometric recognition algorithms.”

The session will also discuss some of the key areas of biometrics application for airport security, exploring how the UAE is a frontrunner in adopting biometrics recognition technology, having successfully deployed multi-biometric entry and exit programs in airports to enable a secured, hygienic and seamless travel experience for passengers.

Webinar registration is free, and can be completed at www.mbzuai.ac.ae/aitalks.
