MBZUAI and Minerva Humanoids announce strategic research partnership to advance humanoid robotics for applications in the energy sector

Thursday, January 29, 2026

Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) and Minerva Humanoids, Inc. have launched a strategic research partnership to develop next-generation humanoid robotics tailored for safety-critical industrial operations. This two-year research framework focuses initially on the energy sector, aiming to transform how complex environments like refineries and processing plants are managed.

The collaboration bridges the gap between foundational artificial intelligence (AI) research and industrial application. By combining MBZUAI’s world-leading academic expertise with Minerva’s specialized humanoid platforms, the partnership seeks to reduce human exposure to high-risk areas while tackling the industry’s most demanding safety requirements.

Moving beyond traditional robotics, which are often limited to rigid, pre-programmed routines, this partnership focuses on creating versatile, reasoning-based systems. These robots are designed to operate across a spectrum of autonomy, ranging from remote tele-operation to fully independent execution.

Core research efforts include:

  • Foundation Models and Multimodal Perception: Enabling humanoids to interpret visual scenes and natural-language commands in real time.
  • Computer Vision and Reinforcement Learning: Enhancing navigation and precision within confined spaces or environments with limited visibility.
  • Digital Twins and Simulation: Providing high-fidelity virtual environments to safely develop and validate robotic interventions before physical deployment.

Ivan Laptev, Professor of Computer Vision at MBZUAI, said: “We are building systems that are versatile from day one, moving beyond narrow, task-specific programming. This work advances MBZUAI’s mission to develop AI for human well-being and sustainable industry, enabling humanoid platforms to understand complex environments in real time and adapt their skills to the rigorous demands of safety-critical operations.”

Sandor Felber, CEO of Minerva Humanoids, added: “MBZUAI has been an exceptional partner as we build out our R&D capabilities in the region. The UAE is positioning itself at the forefront of AI and robotics, and we’re proud to contribute to that ecosystem while advancing technology that protects human life in some of the most demanding jobs on the planet.”

A key pillar of this collaboration is the development of local talent, where MBZUAI students are integrated into joint project teams to gain hands-on experience in AI model development, robotics systems integration, and applied testing. This comprehensive approach supports the UAE’s ambition to become a global hub for AI-driven robotics in safety-critical domains, while ensuring the core technologies developed are inherently scalable to a broad spectrum of industrial applications beyond the energy sector.
