Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) – the world’s first graduate-level artificial intelligence (AI) university dedicated to research – recently hosted Malaysian Prime Minister, H.E. Anwar Ibrahim, who was received by H.E. Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, Chairman of MBZUAI, and COP 28 President-Delegate, to advance ties between the UAE and Malaysia’s technology strategies, specifically in artificial intelligence (AI).

Eric Xing, MBZUAI President and University Professor; Timothy Baldwin, MBZUAI Acting Provost and Professor of Natural Language Processing, along with the university’s senior management, guided the delegation on a tour of the university’s campus in Masdar City, highlighting the rapidly growing clean-tech cluster and urban community.

MBZUAI faculty delivered presented research on healthcare, large language models (LLMs), and sustainable AI. Presentations included the university’s latest research in computational biology; highlighting AI’s ability to sift through enormous datasets beyond human limitations with a focus on the use of AI for developing treatments, personalized healthcare, clinical diagnosis, target discovery, and drug design.

The university presented its very own AI operating system (AIOS) – an AI platform that can substantially reduce the three big costs of AI computing — energy, time, and talent. In use already, the AIOS has the power to reduce AI computing energy costs by making models smaller, faster, more efficient, and less reliant on expensive hardware for AI creation.

With the use of LLMs soaring around the world, MBZUAI showcased its ongoing work and contributions in this area, including live demonstrations on Vicuna, a carbon friendly open-source chatbot created with four other global universities; as well as Jais, the world’s most accurate Arabic LLM, created in partnership with G42’s Inception and Cerebras Systems.
