Letter from Interim President

Dear Applicant,

Since we launched Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) in October last year, we have received thousands of applications from more than 80 countries. It has been trulyinspiring to see not only the immense caliber of each application, but to read the personal stories attached to each, and to see so many young people aligned with the values of MBZUAI.

Over the past six months the University has made a great deal of progress, and we are eager to welcome the first cohort of students to join us in Abu Dhabi. We are recruiting a world-class faculty and our campus, located in Masdar City, is in the final stages of completion, anticipated to be ready less than a month from now. We plan to send out our first acceptance letters imminently.

However, as everywhere in the world, our plans have been disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The major impact on our plans reflects the fact that our students will come, for the most part, from countries that have been more seriously impacted and where travel restrictions rest in force. For these reasons, the University’s Board of Trustees has made the decision to reschedule the start of our first academic year to January 2021.

This is not something that we could have envisioned, especially in the final stages of preparation for the initial August start date. While this was not an easy decision to make, we wholeheartedly believe it to be the right one, as the health and wellbeing of our students, faculty and staff, who will join MBZUAI from all across the world, is our top priority.

We want to ensure that every one of you who deserves to be part of the first MBZUAI cohort is able to join us at our Masdar City campus when the academic year commences.

This is not the news we ever wanted to share with you, but I strongly believe that this is the right decision both for you and the University.

We look forward to welcoming many of you to Abu Dhabi in January 2021 to begin exploring the full potential of AI together.

In the meantime, stay safe. On behalf of everyone at MBZUAI, I wish you and your loved ones good health during these unprecedented times.

Regards,

Professor Sir Michael Brady

Looking at how AI and technology is being applied during the COVID-19 pandemic, will this have an impact on the curriculum/research focus for the university especially on the healthcare front?

Today and with the COVID-19 pandemic, artificial intelligence is at the forefront of global search for solutions. We see AI today being used in testing centers, mobile tracking and tracing solutions as well as in healthcare to find effective medications and vaccines to combat the disease. Furthermore,  as one of the key research themes for MBZUAI, which is the use of AI for the benefit of society, there is no doubt that there is a huge need and key role for AI to play in dealing with this pandemic.

What happens if the pandemic continues until January 2021?

We hope that this is not the case, however we will continue to monitor the situation and will make any decisions necessary in order to safeguard the health and wellbeing of our students, faculty, staff and the UAE community.
